  • Level 3 Award in Food Safety

    A 'Hands-Off' Approach During COVID-19

    We know the importance of social distancing and self-isolation, but also the need to use this time wisely.

    We have created a new format for this Food Safety qualification, that you can complete wherever you are. We use a mixture of structured, self-directed learning, interactive webinars with the RedCat team and a formal computer-based test, invigilated by the Awarding Body, Highfield ABC.

    Course Aims, and Who It's Aimed At

    This course is for Supervisory staff in any retail, catering or manufacturing business, who are implementing food safety management systems, and directly supervise staff.

    Owners and managers of smaller businesses would also benefit.

    If you're unsure, contact us.

    Aim #1

    Deeper knowledge of food hazards, for your benefit and so you can explain it to others more convincingly.

    Aim #2

    Regarding those all-important "5 Star" procedures, an understanding of what's "under the bonnet" always helps. You'll know a lot more about "HACCP" after this course.

    We'l cover what these procedures look like for common issues like raw material sourcing, preventing cross contamination, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, etc.

    Aim #3

    Bring in some supervisory management principles, to help you make it happen.

    How Do We Deliver?

    We send all the relevant materials prior to the first session, including the traditional coursebook. Learning is spread over four, 1.5 hour webinars, delivered from our No.8 training facilities. After a session, delegates will access the next activities that will reinforce the previous session, and lay the foundations for the next session.

    During the webinars, we'll not only be answering questions and chairing discussions, we'll be conducting activities, using our interactive whiteboard (recording our discussions for sending out afterwards), and carrying out our usual range of demonstrations. This will not be your standard "passive" webinar, delegates will be truly involved.

    Delegates must therefore attend all the live sessions and complete the work assigned to qualify for the assessment at the end of the course.

    We do have a maximum cap on the number of delegates, to make sure that our discussions are inclusive for everyone; this is not a mass-market exercise.

    Why RedCat?

    Tutors Sarah and Richard are chartered Environmental Health Officers. Their extensive knowledge and experience (65 years combined!) is through the traditional "EHO" enforcement role, and 21 years of food safety consultancy through RedCat.

    We've been successfully delivering food safety training locally and nationally since 1988.

    Ensuring that Supervisory staff get the most "return on investment" from courses such as this, is as vital as ever. This program will help deliver the knowledge, retention, understanding and behaviour change that supervisors require, something traditional e-learning simply can't guarantee.

    The Technicalities

    Delegates will need;

    • A quiet space for study, particularly during the webinars (it's amazing how much background noise gets picked up by a microphone, but if the kids are at home, fair enough!)
    • A laptop or personal computer with basic office programmes
    • Reasonable internet connection
    • An isolated space during the test is an ABSOLUTE MUST. There can't be anyone interrupting or entering your zone.
    • A webcam; the Highfield invigilator will be watching you, as you conduct the test on your computer
    • A smartphone; before the test, you'll live stream to Highfield a walk-through of your work-space; behind your seat, under the table, on the ceiling, everywhere, to prove there are no hidden "cheat aids". So don't even think about it!
    • A valid form of photo identification to show, before the test (see * below for acceptable ID formats)
    • Level 2 Award in Food Safety is highly desirable; we don't have the time to go over the basics.

    Answers are automatically uploaded online, once successfully completed you'll receive the official certificate through the post. There are re-sit options if the unthinkable happens.

    Lastly, our Equal Opportunities procedure is being reviewed in the light of this course, as it does require the basic IT skills some people may find demanding, but this is 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic.

    *ID formats;

    • valid passport (any nationality);
    • signed UK photo card driving licence;
    • valid warrant card issued by HM Forces, Police;
    • other photographic ID card, e.g. employee ID card (must be current employer), student ID card, travel card.
